❓ HOW DOES IT WORK?
The hackathon is held fully online from Friday afternoon until Sunday evening, and the work of your team and all communications will happen on the hackathon platform - Slack. First, you need to register (look for the “Register” button!) for the hackathon. Then, you can either submit an idea and look for teammates, or look at other ideas and apply to join one of them. On Thursday 12:00, the hackathon platform will be open, and you can already start talking with potential or existing teammates. However, the official teamwork starts on the evening of May 6 after a short opening ceremony. Afterwards, you will set up a call with your team and together, develop your ideas into solutions and prototypes. You will be assigned a team mentors to ensure you are going the right way. Response mentors are available for consultations and support.

On May 8, it is time to submit an overview of the idea that you have worked on. The best 10 teams will present their ideas at the closing ceremony, and the jury will select the 3 teams to win prizes. The jury chooses the winners, and they are announced right away. After the hackathon, there are no strings attached; you can freely continue the work on your ideas and solutions.

❓ WHO CAN APPLY?
Hackathon language is English, so a working understanding of the language is useful. As Born Global Sustainability hackathon takes place online, no other restrictions apply - anyone, whether a sustainability enthusiast, developer, designer, product expert, or anyone and those passionate about coming up with sustainability-related solutions is the right person to participate in a hackathon.

❓ WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?
None! All you need is the motivation to build something, willingness to contribute and dig deeper into solutions that are built on sustainability. Participants will be encouraged to consider digital tools and technology solutions that could help move their ideas forward more effectively and implement them more easily. During the hackathon process, every participant will have access to a mentor's guidance and advice on improving their approach, including choosing the best solutions suited for your idea.

❓ CAN WE APPLY AS A TEAM IF WE HAVE ALREADY STARTED A PROJECT?
Teams with early stage ideas and solutions that are already in process are welcome to join the hackathon. Please be advised that in the evaluation process and during checkpoints with the team mentors, you will be evaluated based on the idea itself as well as the progress you have made specifically during the hackathon days, not before.

❓ DO I NEED AN IDEA TO PARTICIPATE?
In short - no. You can register for the hackathon and seek out for other participant ideas, look for other teammates and join the team and idea that sparks your interest.

❓HOW DOES TEAM FORMATION WORK?
A team should consist of 3-8 participants covering different roles. If you have an idea and are looking for teammates, you should submit it on Eventornado. If you want to join a team, you should browse the already submitted ideas. Participants are responsible for finding a team (submitted idea) to join, and Team Leads (those who submit ideas) are responsible for forming their teams. You will also have an opportunity to find team members on Thursday at the #team-formation channel on Slack when it opens!

❓WHAT TOOLS ARE USED DURING THE HACK?
Slack. The main communication channel for the hackathon. You can connect with organizers and mentors here, as well as create your team workspace channel. All phases of the hackathon happen here: Registration ➞ Idea Submission ➞ Team formation ➞ Final submissions. Once you register, you will have access to separate channels for idea submission, team formation and others.
Zoom. A platform where informative webinars, team checkpoints, final presentations, and other calls take place.

❓WHAT SUPPORT WILL I RECEIVE DURING THE HACKATHON?
First, in case of any practical or technical questions, you will have direct access to the hackathon organizing team at all times. We are here to answer every question and make sure your hackathon experience is as easy, exciting, and productive as possible! Second, the most significant help there is to support your work and improve the idea - mentors. Mentors are divided into 2 groups - there are Team Mentors (also called nannies) & Response Mentors (mentors with a specific skill set). Each team has a dedicated Team mentor, while Response mentors are not assigned to any particular team but are available for consultation on their area of expertise.

❓ WHAT ARE THE TEAM CHECKPOINTS?
Each team will have a designated team mentor that will check in on them through 1:1 Zoom calls at set times to make sure you move in the right direction or connect you with response mentors in case you need some more guidance in particular domains. At least one person from the team should participate. Nevertheless, it's recommended that all team members join.

❓ WHAT ARE THE PRIZES?
The 3 best teams will receive a cash prize of 3000 EUR each after taxes to fund the further development of their idea. The winning teams need have (or register after winning) a legal entity to receive the cash prize, as it will not be paid out to private persons.

❓ WHO OWNS THE IDEA?
The team fully owns the idea, regardless of whether they win a prize or not.
