RIVALAND
Pitch video: remember you have a maximum of 3 minutes to present your idea and 1 minute to present your demo!
Please describe your idea briefly (in 20 words or less)
Rivaland is a sustainable and low-cost nature-based solution for the on-site treatment of water through a hybrid composition of water purifying plants and effective microorganisms.
Please elaborate on your solution and how it is solving the challenge/topic you're applying for?
Water quality in the Litany River is deteriorated due to the discharge of sewage water into the river. Consequently, this problem is affecting the quality of crops irrigated by this water. As a preemptive measure, the Litany River Authority deliberately destructs some crops in fear of environmental health hazards. Many farmers had to give up their work due to this problem. In response to this issue, we developed a nature-based solution to treat water on-site. RIVALAND is a designed floating island implemented directly into small irrigation ponds to ensure that farmers have safe access to clean water. The island is a hybrid composition of plants and effective microorganisms that work on the chemical composition of wastewater. Tested results show a drastic decrease in harmful chemicals, less turbidity, and less pH. RIVALAND provides a new model that is sustainable, low cost, aesthetically pleasing, odorless, and efficient.
Who are your customer segments?
Our customers are primarily the farmers benefitting from the river for irrigation uses , also we are targeting the unions of farmers, municipalities, and agricultural NGOs
Who are your competitors? How can you scale?
Our competitors are in the green technology field in Lebanon. They provide wastewater treatment through solar energy. This technique however, is still expensive and unfavorable by farmers. Our solution is cheaper and more vernacular to the farmer's world.
At what stage is your solution?
We have a prototype
How many team members are you?
4 or more
Describe the background of each team members and their role
We are a team of five women from the field of science and engineering - Mariam bazzi has a bachelor degree in Landscape architecture and a Master degree in Urban Design - Hiba Dahcheh has a bachelor degree in Landscape architecture and a Master degree in Urban Design - Alaa Houjeij has a Master's degree in Marine Biology - Wafaa Zeino has a Master's degree in Microbiology - Malak Sinjer has a Master's degree in Civil Engineering
Is your solution a software, a hardware, or both (IoT)?
Hardware
Describe your prototype in few words
Our prototype is a 2 units of RIvaland. It is a 2.3m * 1.5m floating island formed from 4-inch plastic pipes filled with used plastic bottles to allow the bed to float. An Hdpe mesh covers the surface to allow other layers to sit. Above it is a layer of jute fiber and peat moss which form the planting area. The water purifying plant Typha latifolia will be planted on the surface. During this workshop, we developed an idea to add the Effective microorganisms solution to the prototype. We will create openings at one side of the bed to allow for dripping of the Effective Microorganism solution to the water.
